Live Demonstration Supports Biogas Development Through Public Consultation

This week, Exeon had the pleasure of hosting a live demonstration of our odour removal technology in support of a proposed biogas development in Southern Europe. The event brought together local residents, environmental agencies, project stakeholders and decision-makers to experience firsthand how Exeon’s odour control systems perform in an operational environment. Rather than simply explaining the technology, attendees were able to witness its effectiveness for themselves and gain a clear understanding of how odour emissions from biogas facilities can be successfully managed. Stewards of Biogas – Protecting What Powers Us

At this year’s industry event, our Head of Technical Design, Matthew McDowell, delivered a thought-provoking talk on a subject that sits at the very heart of what we do at Exeon: how we manage emissions, protect communities, and safeguard the future of the biogas industry. Biogas at a Crossroads Across the UK, anaerobic digestion (AD) is recognised as a technology with vast potential to cut emissions, recycle nutrients, and boost rural economies. Yet for many outside the industry, it is still viewed with caution. As Matthew highlighted, the problem is often not the technology itself—but how it is managed. As operators, engineers, regulators, and solution providers, we are more than just plant managers. We are stewards of powerful systems that increasingly sit within the daily rhythms of local communities. That stewardship brings responsibility. How we manage odour, ammonia, and emissions will determine whether our plants are embraced—or resisted. Public Concerns are Real Matthew shared his experience as a former plant operator, where a shift towards using sustainable agricultural wastes led to an unintended consequence: increased odour emissions and community opposition. What began as a noble effort to reduce carbon and close loops in agriculture quickly became a social challenge. This paradox highlights a key truth: while biogas reduces emissions overall, poorly managed odour and ammonia can undermine public trust. If we want planning approvals, permits, and community support, we must earn and maintain our social licence to operate. Stewardship Means Managing Trust Good stewardship isn’t just about compliance—it’s about confidence. Even the perception of odour can halt expansion plans or damage reputations. Matthew argued that biogas operators must invest in discreet, reliable odour and emissions control technologies, not only for new plants but also retrofitted into existing facilities. This is where Exeon’s modular, pre-assembled systems stand out: cost-effective, efficient, and adaptable to each site’s needs. Success Stories from the Field Matthew shared two examples where proactive emissions management delivered real benefits: From Complaints to Compliance – One operator under community pressure deployed targeted odour capture and treatment at storage and processing points. Complaints dropped to zero, and the operator successfully secured community support for expansion. Ammonia Management as Growth Enabler – Another client faced regulatory restrictions due to ammonia emissions. After Exeon installed modular scrubbing systems, ammonia levels fell by over 80%, unlocking new feedstock opportunities and future-proofing site growth. These aren’t just operational wins—they’re strategic growth enablers. Protecting What Powers Us As Matthew concluded: “Trust isn’t won in boardrooms or PowerPoints.
