Odour Abatement for Waste Transfer Plant

Issue

The Neath Port Talbot County Council was looking to reconfigure the existing MREC site to process domestic and commercial waste. Upgrade of the existing dust filter system to an Odour and Abatement system was also required as part of these works.

The installation was required to achieve 1,500ou/m3 at discharge. To meet BAT (best available techniques), carbon deep-bed adsorption was required. It was also important that Carbon monoxide fumes from the excavators were controlled for internal air quality requirements.

The installation was required to be carried out within a 6-month window, including a 20day shutdown of the waste processing area where the old system was required to be changed to the new.

Solution

Exeon supplied and installed an Odour & abatement system to control dust to 5mg/Nm3 and odour to within 1,500odour units per m3 (ou/m3). Initial odour readings at discharge were 150ou/m3.

CFD Models (computational fluid dynamics) were run to determine airflows within the building. Exeon supplied and installed Extract ducting and supply air grills / fans to ensure the required air changes were achieved across the building.

The installation was completed within a 6 month period and the 20day shutdown was negotiated successfully.
