Downdraft Booth

downdraft booth

A downdraft booth provides one of the best forms of dust control for tasks where local capture is difficult to provide.

A downdraft booth offers an isolated area where processes such as weighing or decanting powders, or spraying, sanding or grinding, can be contained.

Dust or fumes are effectively controlled without spreading within the building or harming operators.

Types of Booth

Downflow Booth (DFB)

  • Contaminated air is extracted at low level at the rear,
  • The air is then filtered by 2 or 3 stage filtration within the rear of the booth. This section also contains the air mover (fan)
  • Air is returned at high level, providing a cleaned curtain of air which pushes the dusty air down to low level, to be collected by the extract airflow.
  • A small proportion of the return air is discharged outside the booth to maintain a negative pressure within the booth, to prevent migration

Extraction Booth (RPB)

  • Contaminated air is extracted at the rear,
  • The air is then filtered within the rear of the booth, or sometimes by a remote separate unit. This section also contains the air mover (fan).
  • Filtration is by reverse-pulse allowing for high-volumes of dust, which is captured in bins.
  • Air is discharged above the booth, or sometimes outside, depending on the process.

Benchtop Booth (BTB)

  • Has a smaller enclosed area with a bench-level process area.
  • Contaminated air is extracted at the rear,
  • The air is then filtered within the rear of the booth, or sometimes by a remote separate unit. This section also contains the air mover (fan)
  • Air is discharged at the side of the booth, or sometimes outside.

Benefits of of Booth Type

Booth TypeApplications/Benefits
DFB Downflow Booth
  • Best contamination control due to clean air downflow.
  • Does not require operators to work in a certain direction.
  • No air extracted from space, saving heating energy costs and air makeup requirements.
RPB Extraction Booth
  • Used for higher volumes of dust with self-cleaning capability.
  • Can have separate extractor unit if this is required.
BTB Benchtop Booth
  • Used for more compact processes where bench-level work is carried out.
  • Reduces capital and running cost and space requirements.
